Product Description
The unique shape allows two independent suture tapes to be loaded. This enables the surgeon to reconstruct both the conoid and trapezoid ligaments using a single device, restoring natural shoulder mechanics.
The "lobes" of the dog bone provide a wide footprint on the bone surface. This prevents the button from pulling through or sinking into the clavicle, even under the high vertical loads of the human arm.
Designed with rounded edges and a slim profile, the button fits flush against the bone. This reduces the risk of "hardware prominence," which can be uncomfortable in the thin-skinned area of the shoulder.
The primary indication is the treatment of acute and chronic Acromioclavicular (AC) joint dislocations and Coracoclavicular (CC) ligament ruptures.
Occasionally utilized in pelvic trauma or specialized ligamentous repairs where dual-strand suspension is required for multi-directional stability.
Can be used for heavy-duty tibial fixation in PCL reconstructions or as a heavy anchor point for multi-ligament knee injuries requiring high-load suspension.

A Dog Bone Button is a small titanium metal plate shaped like a toy dog bone. It is used as a permanent anchor in shoulder surgery to hold the collarbone (clavicle) down in its correct position after a serious injury. It has two holes that allow super-strong tapes to pass through it, acting like "internal suspenders" for your shoulder joint.
This button is the standard tool for AC Joint Reconstruction. When you "separate" your shoulder, the ligaments holding your collarbone down are torn. Surgeons use the Dog Bone Button to pull the bones back together and hold them in place while the body heals, often using it in pairs (one on top of the collarbone and one underneath).
The main advantage is Strength and Shape. Because it has two lobes, it covers more surface area on the bone, making it very hard to pull out. It also allows the surgeon to use two separate tapes, which makes the repair twice as strong as using a standard single-hole button. It is small and flat, so most patients never even feel it after surgery.
Biomechanically, the Dog Bone Button provides Multi-Vector Stability. By allowing for two strands of Suture Tape, it controls both vertical and horizontal translation of the clavicle. The wider footprint ($A$) reduces the pressure ($P = F/A$) on the bone cortex, preventing the button from eroding the bone over time, which is essential for a permanent, high-tension repair.
A small hole is drilled through the clavicle and the coracoid process. The surgeon passes the Suture Tapes through the hole. One Dog Bone Button is placed on the bottom (coracoid) and another on the top (clavicle). The tapes are threaded through the eyelets and tightened, "sandwiching" the bones into their natural position. The tapes are then knotted or secured, creating a permanent ligament replacement.
Because this fixation is extremely strong, patients can often start Early Passive Range of Motion within days of surgery. The titanium is permanent and MRI-safe. Patients usually wear a sling for a few weeks to protect the soft tissue while it heals around the button, but the Dog Bone Button provides the immediate mechanical strength needed to keep the joint aligned.
The Dog Bone Button is a specialized and powerful solution for complex shoulder injuries. Its anatomical shape and dual-suture capacity provide the high-load stability required to restore shoulder function and help athletes and active patients return to their previous levels of activity.
The shape is functional; the two wider "ends" prevent the button from falling into the bone tunnel, while the narrow middle and dual holes allow for two separate strands of high-strength tape to be used for a stronger repair.
Yes. The Dog Bone Button is made from high-grade medical titanium, which is non-magnetic and completely safe for MRI and CT imaging.
No. These are designed as permanent implants that stay in the body for life. They are biocompatible and do not cause long-term issues.
When used with Suture Tape, the Dog Bone system can withstand forces of over 1500 Newtons, which is significantly more than the weight of a human arm, ensuring the repair stays intact.
While it is primarily for the shoulder, some surgeons use it in the knee for PCL reconstruction or multi-ligament repairs because of its high pull-out strength and dual-hole design.
