This is a set of "shaping and cleaning" tools for the smooth surface of your joints. When cartilage is torn or soft, it’s like a pothole in a road. This set gives the surgeon special tiny scrapers (curettes) and lifters (elevators) to clean out the loose, damaged cartilage and make the edges of the "pothole" clean and vertical so it can be filled and repaired.
This set is used in Cartilage Repair Surgery. If a patient has a focal "hole" in their knee cartilage, the surgeon uses these tools to scrape away the dead tissue. Once the area is clean and the bone is exposed, they can perform techniques like "Microfracture" (making small holes to start healing) or "OATS" (plugging the hole with a healthy piece of cartilage).
The main advantage is Precision. You cannot use regular surgical tools for this; you need these specific shapes to reach into the curves of the knee or hip. Because the tools are so sharp, the surgeon doesn't have to push hard, which prevents them from accidentally damaging the healthy cartilage nearby. A clean "rim" around the defect is the #1 factor in whether a cartilage repair will be successful.
Biomechanically, the goal of this set is to facilitate Subchondral Bone Exposure. By removing the calcified cartilage layer using the ring curettes, the surgeon exposes the underlying vascular bone. This allows for the migration of mesenchymal stem cells ($MSC$) from the bone marrow into the defect, which is the biological basis for fibrocartilage formation ($F$) during the healing process.
The surgeon identifies the soft, unstable cartilage through the arthroscope. Using a Ring Curette, they scrape the damaged tissue until they reach the hard, bleeding bone. They then use an Angled Elevator to create vertical walls around the defect. This "box-like" shape is the ideal geometry to hold a blood clot or a cartilage scaffold in place while it heals.

If you feel the curette "skating" over the cartilage instead of "biting" into it, it may be dull. We recommend replacing or professionally sharpening the instruments if they no longer provide a clean cut with light pressure.
