Product Description
The T-shaped head provides space for 2 or 3 screws in a transverse row, maximizing purchase in small periarticular bone fragments where a straight plate would have insufficient room.
Specifically thinned for toy breeds (e.g., Pomeranians, Chihuahuas) and feline patients to prevent skin tension and "palpable implant" discomfort following surgery.
The scalloped under-surface reduces bone contact by up to 60%, ensuring that the blood supply to the bone remains uninterrupted, which is vital for the high-risk "distal radius" fractures in small dogs.
By locking the screw head into the plate, the system creates a rigid frame that prevents "toggle" and screw loosening, even in the soft, cancellous bone of young or geriatric pets.
Indicated for proximal humeral fractures in very small dogs and cats. The T-head allows for secure fixation in the humeral head while the shaft provides axial stability.
The "Gold Standard" indication for mini T-plates. Specifically designed for toy-breed distal radius fractures, where the widened head provides the necessary stability to prevent non-union.
Used for supracondylar femoral fractures. The T-shape allows screws to be placed across the condyles, providing fixed-angle support in a high-motion joint area.
Indicated for feline mandibular (jaw) fractures or carpal/tarsal arthrodesis. The miniature size and T-shape allow the plate to be adapted to the small, flat surfaces of the skull or small joints.

The Veterinary ALPS Mini T-Plate is an "internal fixator" system designed for micro-orthopedic surgery in small pets. The "T Type" name refers to the anatomical shape of the plate, which features a horizontal head and a vertical shaft. This configuration is specifically engineered for "periarticular" fractures—those occurring near the end of a bone. The ALPS technology (Advanced Locking Plate System) ensures that screws lock into the plate rather than relying on bone compression for stability. In the "Mini" version, every component is scaled down to 1.1mm or 1.6mm sizes, providing the same high-level stability of large-animal systems in a package small enough for a 1kg puppy or a kitten.
The primary application for this system is the distal radius and ulna fractures in toy-breed dogs, which are among the most common and difficult fractures to treat in veterinary medicine due to poor blood supply. The T-head allows for multiple screws to be placed in the tiny distal fragment, ensuring rotational stability. It is also applied in feline humeral fractures, small animal tarsal arthrodesis, and distal tibial fractures. The T-shape makes it versatile for any "short-segment" fixation where a standard straight plate would not provide enough screw density at the edge of the fracture.
The most significant advantage is the "biological preservation." Small breeds have very thin periosteum; traditional plates can crush this layer and cause bone death. The ALPS Mini T-Plate uses a "Point Contact" design that leaves the periosteum intact. Additionally, Titanium is superior to stainless steel for small pets because it is non-magnetic (allowing for later MRI) and has a lower thermal conductivity, so the pet doesn't feel "cold" in the limb during winter. The fixed-angle locking mechanism also means that the plate does not need to be perfectly contoured to the bone to provide stability, which simplifies the surgery and reduces the time the pet is under anesthesia.
Biomechanically, the Mini T-Plate functions as a load-sharing construct. The T-head creates a "buttress" effect at the joint surface, while the locking screws transfer the mechanical load from the bone into the Titanium plate. Because the screws are locked to the plate, they cannot "toggle" or back out, which is a major cause of failure in toy-breed orthopedic repairs. The Titanium alloy (Ti-6Al-4V) provides a modulus of elasticity that is much closer to animal bone than stainless steel, reducing "stress shielding" and encouraging the bone to remain strong during the healing process.
The surgical technique begins with a minimally invasive approach to the bone. The veterinarian uses mini bending irons to slightly contour the Titanium plate if necessary. For the T-head, a locking drill guide is used to ensure the 1.1mm or 1.6mm screws are inserted perfectly perpendicular to the plate. The head screws are typically placed first to secure the articular fragment. Then, the shaft screws are inserted. Because it is a locking system, the bone is not pulled toward the plate, preserving the fracture reduction. The surgeon can use a mix of locking and non-locking screws if interfragmentary compression is needed before final locking.
Postoperative care for the pet involves strict cage rest for 4–6 weeks with gradual return to leash walking. For the instrument set, care is critical due to the microscopic size of the tools. The 1.1mm/1.6mm screwdrivers and drill bits must be cleaned manually with a soft brush to prevent damage to the fine threads and cutting edges. Using an ultrasonic cleaner is highly recommended to remove microscopic debris from the locking holes of the T-plates. The entire set is then steam-sterilized at 134°C. The Titanium T-plates are single-use; once they have been bent or used in a patient, they must never be re-used.
The TOOLMED Veterinary ALPS Mini T-Plate system is an essential tool for any clinic treating small-breed dogs and cats. Its combination of biological point-contact design and rigid T-head locking stability provides the highest success rate for challenging distal limb fractures in the smallest of patients.
The 1.1mm system is designed for patients weighing as little as 500g up to 2kg, making it suitable for kittens, toy puppies, and even some large avian species.
While this is a T-shaped plate, it is a reconstruction/fracture plate. For TPLO (Tibial Plateau Leveling Osteotomy), we recommend our dedicated Veterinary TPLO Locking Plate series which has a specific anatomical curvature.
Distal radius fractures in toy breeds have a high rate of "non-union" (failure to heal). Titanium’s biological compatibility and the ALPS point-contact design maximize blood flow, which is the most important factor in these cases.
Yes, the Mini ALPS set includes specialized 1.1mm/1.6mm bending irons that allow you to shape the Titanium plate without damaging the threaded locking holes.
Our Mini T-Plates come in two standard head configurations: a 2-hole head for very narrow bones and a 3-hole head for maximum stability in wider metaphyseal areas.
