Product Description
In arthroereisis procedures, the screw blocks excessive motion of the subtalar joint. This "internal splint" restores the foot's arch while still allowing the joints to move naturally during walking.
The hollow center allows the surgeon to first place a thin wire into the perfect spot under X-ray, then slide the screw exactly over it. This ensures 100% accuracy in the tight spaces of the foot.
The screw is wider at the top and narrower at the tip. This tapered design allows it to wedge securely into the Sinus Tarsi, preventing it from migrating or backing out over time.
Made from Grade 5 titanium, which is non-magnetic, lightweight, and highly resistant to the corrosive environment of the human body. It is optimized for long-term implantation.
The primary indication for pediatric or adolescent patients whose arches collapse when they stand, but are still flexible.
Used to stabilize the hindfoot in patients who experience chronic "rolling" of the ankle or midfoot.
Used as a heavy-duty compression screw to fuse the talus and calcaneus in cases of severe trauma or end-stage arthritis.
Often used in early-stage adult flatfoot correction to take the load off the weakened tendons on the inside of the ankle.

Think of this screw as a "doorstop" for your foot. Between your ankle bone (talus) and your heel bone (calcaneus), there is a natural tunnel called the Sinus Tarsi. In people with flat feet, the ankle bone slides too far into this tunnel, causing the foot to collapse. This screw is placed in that tunnel to stop the collapse and push the arch back up into its natural position.
For many patients, especially children, this is a much better option than major surgery. It doesn't require cutting any bone. It’s a minimally invasive procedure—the surgeon makes a tiny 1-2cm incision, puts the screw in, and the patient can often start walking again within days or a few weeks.
The screw doesn't actually go through the bone in arthroereisis; it sits between the bones. Its tapered threads and specific shape allow it to wedge into the tunnel. Over time, your body’s soft tissues grow around it, keeping it perfectly in place.
Biomechanically, the subtalar joint is responsible for "inversion" and "eversion" (tilting your foot). If this joint is too loose, the whole foot collapses inward. The screw acts as a mechanical block, correcting the alignment of the entire lower leg and reducing strain on the knees and hips.
The procedure is very quick, usually taking less than 30 minutes. Using a guide wire and X-ray, the surgeon selects the correct size screw (from 5mm to 12mm) to find the perfect "fit" that creates a beautiful arch. Once the screw is tightened, the arch is restored instantly.
Most patients don't even know the screw is there. Because it is made of Titanium, it is incredibly light and safe. In many pediatric cases, the screw is left in for 2-3 years until the foot finishes growing and the muscles are strong enough to hold the arch on their own, at which point it can be removed. In adults, it is often permanent.
The Subtalar Screw is a small but powerful tool for foot reconstruction. By restoring the foot's natural architecture with a minimally invasive approach, it helps patients walk straighter, run faster, and live without the pain of flatfoot deformities.
Most patients cannot feel the screw once the incision has healed. It is tucked deep inside the "Sinus Tarsi" tunnel between the bones, far away from the skin surface.
Yes! Once the initial healing period is over (usually 4-6 weeks), children can return to all sports, including running and jumping. The screw is designed to handle those forces.
Yes. Titanium is non-magnetic. It is completely safe for MRI scans and will not set off metal detectors at the airport.
In children, the screw is often removed after 2 to 4 years once the foot has "learned" to stay in the correct position. In adults, the screw is typically intended to stay in permanently.
Your surgeon will use "trial" spacers during the surgery to see which size (from 5mm up to 12mm) gives you the best arch height and most comfortable movement.
